I have a pair of Grand Prix tailights, and I'd like to separate the red lens from the back part of the taillight housings where the bulbs are located. It looks like the lens is glued to the housing. A friend said that if I stick the whole assembly in an oven for about 10 minutes at a low heat (150 degrees F), the heat should loosen the glue, and I can separate the lens from the housing. It sounds reasonable to me, but I'd like to avoid any damage to the lens. Has anyone here ever tried this, or have any other ideas on how to do this? Thanks in advance.

Why are you trying to seperate the two halves? It is more like a silicone that glues the parts together but a little heat will soften it and then can be pulled apart. Try a hairdyer first, if that doesn't work then use the oven.

I want to transfer the "GP" emblem from one set of lenses to another. I asked about using a hairdryer or a heat gun, and my friend said that the heat would be too localized on just one area of the lens, and its better to heat the entire lens/housing assembly, in order to loosen the glue on the whole thing. he claimed that it would give me a better chance of separating the lens intact.

if you have a wrecking yard nearby maybe you can pick up a tail light from a G body for a test piece to see what works

The "GP" emblem is lightly glued to the outside of the lens. You don't need to separate the light housing in order to remove the emblem.
