Grand Cherokee Steering Shaft --Didn't fit

i went and got my shaft out of a grand cherokee today. it is the nacam shaft pictured above and i did a test fit today and the only issue i think i will have is the old style has a through style bolt and the new cherokee one has a pinch bolt. and the pinch bolt doesn't clear the steering stub.

no big deal i can notch it with a grinder so the bolt will fit, but has anyone else had this issue?

I had the same issue. I used a round file to notch it a bit. other issue was that the upper clamp was too tight so i spread it a bit.

yeah, i had to spread mine a bit. im surprised no one mentions that stupid bolt not being a direct fit.

even that vid stops just short of dealing with that bolt, lol.

I had to spread mine open a little and notch the shaft to fit it. Man, did that sound bad!

i had to as well.

now i am noticing that i can hear the shaft knock around a little bit over potholes and also under medium to hard acceleration the steering almost feels to lock up a bit. it gets hard to turn the wheel. anyone else experience this?

lol I thought about it too.. Maybe the u-joints are bad?? But i haven't really felt that and to be honest it feels almost the same as the old shaft other than the "tighter" feeling. Even though my car seems to "float" alot...so i am just waiting on rebuilding the front suspension with new components and dropped springs. Hopefully this cures the floating feeling.

yeah, im not feeling it too much anymore, i think the u joint are pretty decent, i think that more of the feeling of the suspension travels up through the shaft with u joints rather than the rag joint.

the stiff tight feeling when i am accelerating has disappeared as well,

Does anyone know if the jeep steering swap will work on a 1980 Caballero? Are there differences in the spline count or on the side of the steering column output between the a-body and g-body cars?
