Great fun! My car overheated!

ok, good news is that the car is no longer overheating, but now the damn check engine light comes on. Tried unhooking the battery to see if it just needed to be reset, but it still came on. We were saying maybe changing the oil will fix this. It is 6 months old and did get overheated. Any advice?

I don't think the oil has anything to do with the check engine light. If possible jump the A-B terminal on the diagnostic port (I'm assuming you have a computer on the car). The port is usually located under the dash, right under the steering column. You can use a jumper wire or a paper clip and I believe the A-B terminals are at the upper left-hand corner of the port (you may have to look at a diagram from a service manual to be sure). Turn the ignition on to start and the light should flash once-pause-then twice (code 12), three times. Then it will start to flash code(s), again using the sequence of quick flashes, a pause, then a second series of flashes. The first set of flashes is the first digit, the second set the second digit of the code. Another thing you can do is see if you knocked a wire loose or if something is grounding causing the issue.

Again, I don't think it would be an oil problem unless you have coolant in the oil, caused by an internal leak (oil on dipstick would be milky).

Hope this helps.

The problem has since been taken care of. hooked up the diagnostic to it, (it was actually next to the ashtray) It gave me code 14, ran the car after the diagnostic was plugged in and the check engine light never came on. Plug the diagnostic back in and it gave me the code again. So i unhooked the negative cable off the battery and then ran it and checked the code and the code never came back either. So hopefully this is issued solved. Thanks for the info though.
