I don't think the oil has anything to do with the check engine light. If possible jump the A-B terminal on the diagnostic port (I'm assuming you have a computer on the car). The port is usually located under the dash, right under the steering column. You can use a jumper wire or a paper clip and I believe the A-B terminals are at the upper left-hand corner of the port (you may have to look at a diagram from a service manual to be sure). Turn the ignition on to start and the light should flash once-pause-then twice (code 12), three times. Then it will start to flash code(s), again using the sequence of quick flashes, a pause, then a second series of flashes. The first set of flashes is the first digit, the second set the second digit of the code. Another thing you can do is see if you knocked a wire loose or if something is grounding causing the issue.
Again, I don't think it would be an oil problem unless you have coolant in the oil, caused by an internal leak (oil on dipstick would be milky).
