Grinding sound after starter replacement

Theories of why a starter housing cracks include bad timing which causes the flywheel to "kick back" and the need for shims.

When I changed the starter on my 350 years ago, the old one did not have any shims, so I didn't use any on the new starter when I put it on (it didn't even come with shims). The housing cracked. So I had to get another starter and mounted it with shims, and voila -- never a problem again.

How the hell am I supposed to know if the started needed shims in the first place? I dunno. I still don't know.

How much of a gap did you have when you tightenned the bolt? That's an indication that you may need shims, if the bolt doesn't tighten up all the way.

I work at autojunk take it back. They come with lifetime warrantys. Give a manager a hard time and say its chewed up your flywheel because the starter didn't come with shims. Don't back Down. Autojew managers have to give you what ever you want to keep you happy. Have them give you shims free. Done it for people before. Just dont let them tell you no. If they won't budge tell them to give you your money back you'll take it somewhere else.
The name of the company is AUTOZONE....not autojunk or AutoJEW...wtf? If you work there, dont be ashamed to state the obvious and dont throw racism into the conversation....keep it clean or dont post...that simple.

I was able to get my hands on another starter and purchased some gm v8 starter bolts...im going to see if this will work...if this dont work im going with shims.........i aksed the guys at advance they said I dont need any shims as long as the block and flywheel are unmodified

You left out wrong or worn bolts.

That is not an indication that it needs shims. I have seen the wrong replacement bolt have the knurled part extend slightly past the starter, so that when it was tight it was actually the knurled part tight against the block that left the starter loose. It would appear tight because of the other bolt but it was able to eventually start moving enough to cause problems.

Its not racism.. Idn about you but didnt know being jewish was a race.. ha Trust me you work there and tell me otherwise... Its a joke and the parts are horrible. Its a IRS write off so I can get school loans.. I make money on the side, hence how I afford my toys. Anyone who says they have bought parts from autozone and never had a problem with them must have bought air fresheners.

LMAO! Update: installed the new starter from advance auto parts...for some reason the starter bolts i bought from autozone were hard to install so I went back with my old bolts...i made sure the starter was flat with the block and I added a washer on the long bolt. Went to start the car she started perfect without any noise..I guess it was the starters from autozone. Thanks for the help guys. Also the starter i got from advance auto part number was 3502...the 2 i got from autozone the part number was 3602. Guy at advance said they sold me the wrong starter????
