So i was browsing Craigslist for sh*ts and giggles and came across this majestic beast. A 78 Oldsmobile Cutlass for $700. it was too good to pass up. i went and checked it out. the owner was going to scrap it for parts on his race car that he takes to the track but since it runs and drives and is in pretty good shape he wanted to see if anyone would buy it. It started up. it was a racket to drive. the Transmission indicator on the dash doesnt line up with the actual gear that you have selected. so i put it in Drive and started driving away. it wouldnt shift so i thought the trans was screwed. turns out i had thrown it into first gear. i got up to 50 in first haha. so i put into drive and got going again and when the trans tried to shift into second at low RPMs it would make some awful noise, but get into gear. Another issue is a very strong pull to the right, as well as some squeaking and noise coming from the wheels. i said **** it. its a cool car. got a nice body and color. so i drove it home, squeaks and all. it didnt complain at all on the highway. i was impressed. By far the coolest car i own.

So this weekend after a couple days of owning it i picked up some new rotors, pads, and bearings and replaced the front brakes. all squeaks gone. awesome feeling so i took it out and got some pizza to celebrate.

My plans for the car are to clean it up and give it some more power. it needs it. its missing some chrome. the doors are a little messed up. driver side window doesnt roll up or down. no locks. no headliner. electrical issues such as the front parking lights turn on when i hit the brakes(unless thats normal), no turn signals when i move the lever, no hazard lights, and so on. the car has no audio system. the transmission needs replacing. rear window has no seal and just bounces around back there but doesnt fall out. the dash is a horrendous pistachio green.

All in all, this is the coolest car i own. i absolutely love the body style and the color. It has tremendous potential to be an awesome car. I plan to put in a new crate motor, i havent decided on chevy or olds for that. put in a Ford 9 inch rear end. clean up the Interior and make it really nice. i want to make it fast and show worthy.

If any of you have any advice i would greatly appreciate it! This will be a new experience to build a car like this from barely anything up to something really cool.

Welcome to the site. Glad you saved it from a bad end. That's a great body style.

According to the 1978 Cutlass factory brochure, there were three V8 engines available in your car: the Olds 260, a Chevy 305 2bbl and a Chevy 305 4bbl. If your car really does have a 305 like you say and not a 260, then I vote for Chevy 350 since it will bolt right into place underhood. Not only would this be your easiest option, it will also be the cheapest.

For that matter, if a Chevy 350 bolts right in then so would a big block Chevy. Just sayin'. 😉

Sweet. I couldn't find any info on 78 cutlass. All i could find was 79 and newer or 77 and older. So that certainly helps. Is there a way to verify that the engine is a chevy somehow? Some indication? The only info i could find was that the VIN says its a 305 2bbl. But the guy i bought it from said it was a 307 2bbl.
Hopefully it is a chevy because that will make my life alot easier haha.

I vote LS power
Im not gonna go that crazy with this build. And that would be alot more expensive for a crate motor. And i dont want to pull and overpriced used one from a wreck yard

great looking car, before adding power I'd lift the body off the frame, box the frame and upgrade the factory welds and replace the body bushings.

Nice car. Good luck with it, Power and performance options are endless. It probably more of a budget thing unless you have a specific preference. Even if it is a olds motor a small block chevy should bolt in there pretty easily. Ls is badd *ss but alot more work and money so Its all upto you. If its a 305 youd be surprised what a set of headers, intake carb and maybe even a mild cam would do. I had a 305 once in a Malibu, it came ot of 76 caprice classic. That car was ridiculously quick. Nobody ever believed me when I told them it was a 305. I had headers, edelbrock cam intake and a gone over rochester, msd 350 trans with a shift kit and 342 out back. I used to run with 5.0 mustangs all day and this was when they were pretty new. I have a 350 now with a similar set up and it doesnt even come close to that 305 I had. Maybe because it came out of caprice, it mightve had higher comp or good heads, I dont really know. Wish I still had it.

Gotcha...And living in CA I am not sure how the emissions would factor into your decision. BTW, you can buy a used truck 5.3 at LQK pick and pull with accessories and computer for less than $400. Cheap and reliable 325 hp without mods. Definitely a learning curve though...
