I'm down to putting my own Headers on with the pipes from a previous G-Body (87 Monte SS - Stainless, custom bent for it - just missing the tailpipes (muffler back)).

I'm reading up on this O2/EGR stuff, and quite frankly, I'm confused.

My 86 GP is a 305 4bbl, completely bone stock. Keeping emissions, no real reason to get rid of it all, it functions properly, why not just keep it. Once the motor goes t*ts up, and I drop a 6.0L or 383 Stroker in it, I guess I'll just use it as is.. except let it breathe a bit.

I am getting my hands on a Edelbrock Performer intake WITH the EGR provision. Putting the intake on isn't a problem.. I can do that, easily.

Headers tho.. they don't have bungs for o2 or EGR.

The o2 one is easy enough, drill a hole.. weld or clamp, depending on the kit.

But with the EGR, its a mixed bag on replies.. Some say cap it off, some say keep it... the replies are all over the place.

Since I am keeping emissions, I ASSUMED keeping the EGR would be MANDATORY... Is it pretty much like the o2 bung? Just weld up a second o2 bung and do the plumbing? Or are there "Add EGR to Headers" kits (which I can't seem to find). Does the plumbing need to be a certain size pipe?

I got a welder, and if I bring what I need and mark here it needs to be put, its not a problem to have the stuff drilled and welded.. Its just this EGR stuff confusing me.

If an upgrade is in the future leave it alone and save the $$$ for the upgrade.

Sell what you have to puts towards the upgrade.

The only upgrade in the future is when the 305 breaks or is just worn out. 50k on it, there really is no reason not to run it. My thought was to just let it breathe a bit.

If it's running on the computer you gotta keep the EGR.

I may be confused here.

The EGR does everything within the intake? I thought the EGR got exhaust gasses from the Exhaust Manifold. The more I look at it, the more it looks like the EGR gets its exhaust gasses from inside the intake and has nothing to do with the exhaust manifold. Is that correct?

That is correct, I was wondering what the problem was since the egr just sits on the intake and operates with vacuum

Most SBC heads have an internal exhaust crossover passageway that goes through the intake manifold to heat it for quicker warmup for carbed engines. The EGR valve taps into the exhaust crossover so there is no need for an external exhaust supply line like most other engines would require. However, the one exception for this with SBCs are the Vortec heads which lack internal exhaust crossovers as they were designed in the EFI era. So if you run Vortec heads, you would need a special Vortec intake manifold which would have a special port for an external exhaust line for EGR.
