If it is a Chevy 305, I have had really great service with my Flowtech long tube headers.

Pic of the engine?

I have Hooker Competition long tube headers the previous owner of my 79 Monte Carlo with a 267 engine installed, Woke up that little 267.
My 79 Monte Carlo in the avatar has Hooker Super Comps on the 406 small block, needed some "Massaging" to make them fit.
When I had my 86 El Camino I ran Dynomax/Cyclone long tubes (I believe Summits "store brand" is made by them) and even modified them to accept the air injection tubes and O2 sensor to work with the computer.
Your "tick" almost sounds like an exhaust leak at one of the air injection plugs or the O2 sensor.

Hope this helps!

the op posted the block numbers...14010201. it's a 305

Well, you never know what numbers people will pick.

11104 Flowtech is what I have used several time and will again for small block Chevy application.

Depending on your state emissions regulations MOST muffler shops will tell you that full length headers would be for "Off Road Use Only" unless they carry a CARB certification number and can be hooked up to your stock exhaust system.
May be a different story if you know someone at the shop but, John Q. Public walking into and wanting a muffler shop to disable the emission system will certainly give them reason to show you the door.

Just fair warning on this!
