Just picked up a 78 Lemans with the Chevy 305 SBC. Anyone have aftermarket long tube headers on theirs? Ultimate goal here is to find a set of long tubes that I can use for the 305 AND that'll fit on a 350 down the road when it gets swapped. Mainly concerned with what header design will fit and clear the firewall.

You are going to have a good choice of which ever header you would really like. I prefer Schoenfeld, very reasonable and I have gotten the best performance w/ them. When looking at headers read the description and the fitment .

what specifically about the description or fitment? any specific size outlets? i was lookin at 1 3/4" then to a 3.0". might lean towards some shorties. I really don't know. I wasn't sure about Shoenfeld cause I never heard of them, but that's reassuring you had a good experience with them on this application. thank you for the reply!

Manual trans or automatic? Probably want 1-5/8 primary tubes with a 305 or even a mildly warmed over 350.

Are you going to run mechanical clutch linkage or hydraulic? A hydraulic setup will open up your options. Some headers don't work with angle plug heads so watch that. I have read that the Hedman Hussler long tubes fit with mechanical linkage. I've seen people praise the Flowtechs for automatic applications which would presumably work with a hydraulic clutch setup. Do you want painted, coated, or stainless? Budget?

the headers are only $150, it wouldn't be a big deal having to get a new set two or three years down the road.
Most any Gbody sbc long tube headers will fit without issues with a 350 trans, if you don't know when the future swap for a 350/ manual trans will take place then maybe buy some cheap 1-5/8" primary headers for the 305 for the time being and later on buy some nice coated/stainless race style headers for your built 350 and depending on how "built" it is it might breath better with larger primaries.

precisely what I was gonna do. found that pair of Shoenfeld for $150. buy some aircraft stripper, get the paint off and high temp prime and coat them. then when the 350 comes, I'll upgrade to something better. I can get an entire header back exhaust done for $400, so that'd be my route. it's nice knowing resources.
