Heat kills LT-1

Thank's guys. It's ordered and on it's way. As a plus, my Daughter won't even look at the b*st*rd anymore and is out shopping for something newer. This could finally be the end of my nightmare!

I put a new coil on today, Driven. What an idiotic place to mount a coil let alone an ignition module. Plus, it seems to have been replaced a some point judging by the screws in place of the factory rivets, yet the genius never applied any silicone grease where it mounts to the head, so no heat sink. I feel it runs a LOT better, and my daughter feels the same since she drives it. Now all I need is to wait until it hits 100º again and see if it conks out. No such luck- she scored a clean 2000 Cherokee today and I'm already fixing sh*t. :blam: '95 Turd Burd for sale! 8)

That Cherokee should keep you just as busy as the Firebird. At least it'll be easier to work on :| .

I'd bet a buck the coil was the problem, symptoms are the same on everything from a '62 with points to the newest thing using a single coil.

That's very true Randy_W. Even outboard motors use a coil per cylinder.

But a single coil was cheaper, and it was all about the profit.

Never made sense to me either. The Cavalier of the same era used a simple cam and crank sensor with multiple coils. The LT1 used an expensive "high tech" Optispark (which was essentially just a complicated cam sensor built into a distributor) PLUS a crank sensor and only used a single coil. Go figure  .

Engineers justifying their jobs!

Well it runs a lot better now, but it's been cool and rainy. Plus I've been going over the Cherokee she scored. I am pleasantly surprised at how clean it is and what good condition mechanically it is in. I once had a 1971 Evinrude 125hp V-4 with a single coil. Headaches. The very next year, '72, they went with 4 coils, one per cylinder. 1972!!!! Leave it to GM to cheap out.
