In the performance engines I done, I've only ever had 4 pin units. I've worked on later cars and replaced them as tune ups, but they were factory stock engines.
I never knew there were two 5 pin or that 3 pin. I had a 5 pin from a 82 Olds but I never used the 5th pin, pretty sure it was tge first one that retarded timing. I have used multiple aftermarket 4 pin modules, killed a MSD and two Pertronix Ignitor 3 modules. I used an Accel 7 pin module without any issues.
