Oh ok I was told that the factory idiot light turns on at 230, so whenever my gauge got up to 230 I figured it was over heating. At what temp do things become dangerous?

With our 602 crate in one our circle track cars it got up to 260º a few times and that is still running around a track and has never been opened. It's just a stock 350 basically. I had a 305 that got up to 250º a few times and the dam thing would not blow up. It depends on the condition of the engine and what oil you are using how heat effects it but I don't think you got it hot enough to hurt it.

I agree 230• is nothing to worry about, I have a 205• thermostat in my stock 260ci it runs 220• all the time, in all cast iron aluminum intake pro stock circle track motors I ran a 205• stat with a 35 psi system they run 240•-260• every night, three nights a week 1,800 laps between rebuilds I never had an issue, it's when you actually lose the water from the system that you can start to hurt it, so in theory you could do a good clean job, check, and surface the heads and put it back together. If you want to pull it out I would leave the trans in the car, unless you have a reason to take it out, saves having to undo the drive shaft, cooler lines etc.

Hmm ok so maybe I could just resurface the heads and put it back together... I guess Ill make the call once I get the passenger side head off and get a good look at everything. Man, that head bolt under the AC box is really hard to get to.

I would assume you would be fine, only you know how hot it got/ how much water it lost, and yes the right side head is by far the harder one, it also makes head studs a little tricky with the motor in the car
