I bought this engine crane off Craigslist.

I am trying to take the engine out of my 1980 Cutlass with a 350 crate motor. The problem is THE BOOM DOES NOT REACH THE LIFT PLATE ON MANIFOLD!!!!

The guy I bought it from says he used the same crane to replace the engine in a Monte Carlo. How would he have done this? The Monte is not that much longer.

The closest my crane's hook gets to the manifold is the alternator mounting bracket.

Should I remove the driver side tire and lift from the side?

HELP!!!

have you tried expanding the boom and lowering it?...

Thats the exact same one I have. Used it for my 83 cutlass. Take the front bumper, grill, etc off.
Exactly. You gotta take the front clip off.

That sounds scary. Is that hard? what is involved in that!!? This is my first engine pulling experience.

that can't be the only way to do take the motor out Ive never taken a motor out of a cutlass but it shouldn't be like that or atleast i woulndn't think.. again is the boom extended??

and taking the front clip off involves taking the fenders bumper etc off its not hard just take pics and note how everything fits. putting it back on is the hard part haha

yes it is in its full 1/4 ton length

Depends on the car, I can pull the engine from my malibu without removing anything, my prior cutlass' however, I had to butt the hoist right up to the bumper, and use a longer chain to let the engine swing forward once the weight was off the frame. Safer/smarter route would be to remove the bumper, that alone may give the extra room needed, if not remove the header panel (both simple to do). No need to remove whole front clip...
