Don't listen to anybody that says you have to pull the front clip. What a waste of time...

Just go from the side over the fender.

I am going to measure this weekend. I think it will fit if I take off a wheel. the "V" of the stand does not reach far back enough because the wheel is in the way. If I take off the wheel and support the car with stands I think it will work. I have the headers detached and Bungie tied off to the sides as far as they will go and the hood is off.

I've had to do that before, works good. 🙂

well here goes nothing.

if that dont work what is the best way to attach the chain to get as much of it forward as possible? Should I attach a short chain to the front of the heads and then another longer pair to the rear transmission mounts for support and try and take it out that way?

Or would a load leveler do aynthing for me?

Also, if you're pulling your transmission at the same time. You can get away with the hoist being closer to the front.

if you attach a chain at an angle the engine will swing forward and take out your header panel once it clears the engine mounts...if you can't do with that engine hoist check at your local tool rental place and they should have an engine hoist for a reasonable price

yuck! dont want that. So will using the engine lift plate attached to the manifold keep the engines center of gravity in the middle? There are three holes in a row along the centerline of the engine to mount the crane hook to.

hmmmm......I bought the same orange lift from Harbor Freight and had no problems with it. I was also to remove and install engine in my narrow garage by myself. I do think the leveler is neccessary on this or any lift.....

I do remember having to go in at a bit of an angle and also extending the boom a little, but overall installing the engine in my Cutlass was very easy.

I've had this problem with some of the "cheaper" hoists. The first one I bought was like this. I went and bought a longer section of box tubing, and just used that as the boom instead of the one it came with. It's held up althogh it has a slight bend in it now. And I would say that the tearing in the metal where the boom enters the other boxed section could be from "overloading" it with the longer boom, but I've seen this tearing problem on hoists with the factory boom still in them.

Oh and another common problem, is having the casters break at the worst possible time.

I pulled the engine out of my Cutlass with a hoist just about identical to that. I had to jack the car up just a little bit and put some boards under the front tires because the hoist would not fit under the control arms. Once I did that, the picker slid right in, though I literally had about 1/4" of space between the bumper and the lift cylinder.

how long is your boom? Mine is 50 1/4 inches.

The boom on that hoist is 48" from the end to where the cylinder attaches, and 60" long overall extended to the furthest point.

Or using a chain hoist on a tree branch and have it break.. :blam:
