i have stock front rotors and studs on my 79 wagon. the stock steelies fit fine but these mystery aluminum rims i have on now have a flange thats too thick for me to feel good about. i have measured and found that i have only about 3/8'' thread engagement inside the nut. i have gone to a few parts stores looking for longer ones but there are none to be had for others are different with shoulders and knurls sizes being different. maybe its just a size thing for these 7/16-20 studs not being thought of in the aftermarket world. what have you or heard others have done? so far it looks like i may have to drill the holes bigger for different studs but yes keep it smaller than the new knurl size i know. feel free to put in ur 2 cents

ok i talked to summit and i found some morosso studs that will fit the front but are 1/2'' studs instead of 7/16'' but the knurl is the same so its just taking the time to pound them out now. on the other hand, i now have 1/2 studs on the front and 7/16 on the rear!? is this nothing or am i thinking too hard. my pet peeve now is to get 1/2 studs in the rear too so there would be no mix up on interchanging any nuts and keep everything the same. too me its like wearing a pair of socks that doesn't match. has anyone ever drilled the stud holes bigger to upgrade wheel studs?

I have Moroso extended studs... 2-7/8s long (almost 3" long)

if you have studs this long, you will likely need to use open ended lug nuts. But the problem here is, the aluminum rims you have probably have a very deep conical seat for the nuts.

I had lots of trouble finding long open end lug nuts. I did not want to cut the studs... I found these on summit

On a side note:
take this opportunity to change all your studs to 1/2... Because 7/16 is becoming more and more rare and it is tough to find nuts, spacers, etc... for them. I had a heck of a time finding anything in 7/16.

If you don't want to change the rears, it's no problem... you can run two different kinda studs... it might be annoying if you mix them up by accident

thanks for the help guys.

the kore3 studs listed are for the rear studs.

iirc the 78-81 have 7/16 sae studs and 82 up have 12mm

i just found out this morning how blind i am. when i ordered the morosso 46150 studs for my rear i didn't see listed in the parts book at my local autoparts ( if they had any brains they would have known and enlightened me) shop that the 46160 morosso studs are the ones with the correct knurl for the front brake rotors and are still 7/16'' stud. i was sweating bullets about drilling for a while. hey, could an admin post this or the numbers in a sticky or something for guys looking for longer studs in a 78-81/82 gm cars with 7/16''-20 sae studs. it would have saved me a couple days of stress. thanks.
