I've been havin an issue with my headlights not workin lately. I do have the GM Oldsmobile service manual for the 1986 Olds but when I look at the section for the headlights, it doesn't seem to explain much on how to fix'em. First I changed both the high and low beam headlights, checked all the fuses. Oh yeah all of my lights come on except for the headlights by the way. Now when I hit my high-beam switch, the high-beams does come on but doesn't stay on because my high-beam switch is a piece of crap.Tomorrow I'm gonna try swapping out the high-beam switch and cruise control lever. I don't think it's a grounding issue because my high-beams does flash on and if I'm not mistaken both the high and low beams are grounded on both sides with the same ground wire for each side. I also don't think it's the bulb connectors either but I'm not exactly sure because right now my voltage meter is actin right but if anyone has any useful info/tips it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....

check the fusable links. follow the power wires down from the battery to the starter, should be two of them, one powers the part of the fuse block that sends power to the headlights (if it goes out, the tail lights and running lights work but not the headlights)

I think you meant the the tail lights and running lights work an not the headlights? 😀

Hmmm....
I'm going to check tomorrow and let cha know. I hope it works because it's my daily. Thanks for the advice bro. 8)

you need to change the headlight/parking light switch next to cluster. my buddys explore did that same thing, turn headlights on, but no headlight only when he held the brights, i put a switch on it and worked like new, so i would try that before i start messing with wires.

definitely replace the head light switch, happened to me in my 78 and have had friends happen to them in other cars

cool, takes a few seconds to check, cause if it is the link, then changing the head light switch will fix it...

yeh i was tired... as i usually am during the week when im up typing... working like crazy

Turns out it was the dimmer switch. At first I didn't think it was because I didn't think that just beause the dimmer switch was bad that it would have anything to do with the low beams not working. In the end tho..., if the dimmer switch isn't placed on the column right it will cause the low beams to not work.
