i set it to 8 degrees like it says on the catalyst and stock distributor with msd cap and rotor and yes stock vacuum advance

usually when the car backfires ur timing is off alot and when smoke puffs out the carb and engine is hard to start ur timing is a little off. i just asked a question about base timing and another member told me to start off at 4 degrees. just play with the timing a bit. try dropping it a couple and raising it a couple and see how it starts.

yeah i pulled it off and the truck runs better with it set at 8 but we couldnt adjust the carb or anything cause we didnt have a vacuum gauge

set her at 10 deg and run the advance on a ported vac.
when it was at 10 she ran a lil rough...do i have to adjust the carb or will that not affect it too much

it is possible that the outer ring of the balancer has shifted. you may have to manually set the engine to TDC and remark. smoke out the intake means that you're very advanced, usually this only happens with the distributor 180* off.

Are you using a timing light? What year is the car and engine? Is the timing chain good? Is the distributor good? Is the firing order correct? Are the sparkplugs good (not fouled out) Is the fuel good?
