yeaa thats exactly wat the previous owner did...rip out the computer, by wat does a lock-up torque converter do?
 
A lock up converter does what it says on the box, it locks up to give a solid drive to the driveshaft eliminating converter slippage thus improving gas mileage.
My Cutlass wagon had a separate switch for some reason, I rigged up a warning light to remind me when it was engaged, if you leave it on all the time you get weird shifting and slowing down at a junction can be disconcerting, that's why the computer is programmed to switch it in and out when appropriate.
