I was working on my Malibu today and noticed that the drivers side door is missing three of the six bolts on the hinges. When I looked into the issue I fond that the three bolts that are missing are broken in the door. Now I know that there is a movable plates which these bolts tighten into and I am wondering is I can replace these plates from inside the door? Or should I look for a new door?

The bolts most likely broke from being over torqued. You can remove the door and if your lucky there may be some of the broken bolt showing to grab with vice grips. If not you drill the broken bolts out or I don't know if they is any room to get inside the door to grab the end of the bolt with vice grips to turn them out..I believe those plates are installed before the put the door skin on so I don't know if you would be able to change them..

I agree with Pontiacgp. Try getting them out without destroying the plate.

the other thing too is if you damage the threads in the plate you can tap the plate for a larger diameter bolt..

I only found this today, thanks for the advice, the door is sitll functioning. Yet another thing I found from previous owner neglegence. Aw well but I sill try to get the old bolts out.
