I have found a column to replace mine.A friend in Barrie has a tan one.
If I recall, tan interiors were available in 1978-80 A body Cutlass'.I don't remember seeing a 1981-88 Cutlass with a tan interior.My car is a 1983.
My question is probably a dumb one.
I turn my high beams on/off with the turn signal lever.
If the column I'm getting is from a 78-80 Cutlass, is it the same, or is the high beam switch on the dash or floor?

I would hold out for a later column. The switches are much different on the earlier cars and you would have to interchange them, IIRC. Remember that the wipers and cruise control were also integrated into the later car's column, and the early ones used a dash mounted switch.

I'm going through the same thing. Switching from column to floor shift. The 78-81 had the wiper swithc on the dash. 82-and later had the wiper switch on the coulmn. BUT, I believ the high beam on our cars was always on the column, well at least my 81 was.

I would hold out for a later column also. There's plenty to be had if you shop online. If you get one thats not the same color as your interior, you can always diassemble it, have it painted, and then install it.

Or maybe you could just fix yours. Yeah I've heard it's a lot of work. But I'm sure swapping out the whole column is a lot of work too. Plus, just because you buy one that seems good from a junkyard. That doesn't mean it will last. I have had this happen to me twice. Bought a column from a junkyard, installed it, and within a month I had to replace them. Well the 2nd time I just had the one in the car fixed. Plus, if you fix yours you don't have to worry about it being a different color.
