This is a complete noob question, but im going to ask anyways... On cold starts my cutlass idles HIGH.. I know it does this to bring the temperature of the engine up (and or carb?). After about 2 mins of this high idle I would rev it up to bring it back to its normal running idle..Is it okay for me to do that? I was told by a friend its not good to rev it up at all on cold starts and to let the engine go into its normal idle speed by itself when it idles HIGH.

what matters is your definition on high idle. the choke could have it around 1500 or so and that would probably ok, i would say never above 2000 but i dont have any specs off the top of my head i would just do it by ear. Sometimes the carbs wants a little help to get the choke to come off with a bit of a rev an dthats fine, just if you are reving at 2000+ to get the choke off you probably shouldn't be doing that

Every carb car I've ever had with fast idle does exactly that. It could be completely warm after 15mins of fast idle sitting there but it wont kick down until you tap the gas.

And yes fast idle should be about 1500rpms and definitely no more than 2000.

Yeah, this is normal. HIGH idle would be like 2500-3000 RPM. 1500 is pretty normal.

This.

Just another thought:

Every winter morning, every year I've owned a G-body (going on five years now, two different ones), Ive always started my monte the same way. Start it, rev to 1500 for about five seconds, then brick the pedal at 2500-3000 RPM until warms up (usually about 3-5 mins). Winters here get down to -30 or colder, and I've never had a problem revving the engine at this RPM in the cold.
