when installing intake gaskets, do you put high temp rtv on bothe the heads and the intake or just the intake?

I normally put a little bit on both sides of the intake gaskets just around the water ports though. Do you self a favor and get ultra black rtv or the great stuff permatex.

The intake gaskets I use have an embossed seal on the intake side but I put a thin coat of Permatex ultra black just around the water ports on the head side, I do it more for holding the intake gasket in position while I set the intake on rather than for any sealing benefits.
I also always use Ultra Black instead of the end seals that come in some intake gasket kits.

thanks guys... new gaskets installed... i used the permatex high temp gasket/seal maker, red color... good up to 650°... the black one said it was good up to 450°, so i went with the red one... hope it works...

I hope you did not buy the red just because of the higher temperature rating because if your engine ever exceeded the temperature rating of ultra black keeping your gasket sealed would be the least of your worries.
Hopefully the new thicker gaskets will solve your intake leak issues.

not just cause it fails at a higher temp but because my block is red and any mess i made would blend in a whole lot better than the black would of... and when i was standing at the shelf looking at all the different tubes of crap, i thought i remembered someone saying to use the red permatex...

Aren't you using a Vortec style intake?

Then the right gaskets should be plastic with rubber seals. No rtv needed. Looks like Edelbrock has a paper style gasket for them which i'm guessing is what you have now. If so the you could use some rtv with them. But that is why you had sealing issued before, you had the non vortec style gaskets.

well, she is all back together and broken in... sounds damn nice, even with the bootlegged exhaust... the first gaskets were vortec style gaskets .060 thick with rubber surrounding the coolant passages, but they leaked... these new paper edelbrock gaskets were .120 thick with no rubber around the coolant passages, but i put a good bead of RTV around the coolant holes on both sides of the gasket and bolted the intake down and waited 24 plus hours before filling her with coolant... only thing that leaked was a 3/8 hole in the intake that i had plugged with a makeshift brass plug... they were all out of 3/8 plugs, but they had a 3/8 to 1/4 sleeve thingy (cant think of what its called) and a 1/4 plug, so i used what they had n made a plug... and the dang thing leaks... not much, maybe 3-4 drops in the half hour i had her running...
