look for some advice on a high torque starter for a olds 455 that's in a 1987 olds cutlas supreme. was wondering would a mini starter fit. the stock unit fits a little tight, its hard to out and to get it back in. its drags a little when i shut it off and try starting again.

Maybe it needs to be rebuilt. I have an old timey auto-electric shop by me that is so good, the starter/alternator/whatever they rebuild will outlast the car it is in. The OEM starter that comes on a Pontiac/Olds 455 is a beast to begin with. If you can't get yours rebuilt by a GOOD shop, this one from Jeg's worked well on our Trans Am 400 engine. Pontiac/Olds are the same. It is very adjustable to conform to the engine shape. https://www.jegs.com/i/Powermaster/713/9510/10002/-1

"its drags a little when i shut it off and try starting again." Hot starts are always a problem. It could be other things that should be checked first.

X2 on the PowerMaster.

Power master in my olds. Didn’t really need it after first but after changing headers around (which I did quite abit yrs ago) several times it was so much easier to handle and gave more tube clearance

The Powermaster mini is good, had a couple. Be aware aftermarket sbc mini WILL fit an Olds V8. I made a mistake buying a Summit sbc mini starter in my Olds powered94 Z71, what POS from new and I wasn't the only one with issues, should have read the reviews. Also their Olds/Pontiac mini has a very finicky power connection, over tighten and the starter no longer starts. I have had good luck with super compact no name Olds mini starters on Ebay. Even more compact than the smallest Powermaster.

A factory big block olds starter will have square armature windings any so cauld high torque starter' has 2 tabs connecting to the bottom solonoid and were the copper tabs gothough a rubber bushing...the 455 type starters I've use have a bigger armature square windings and a big type case .. if you can find one of these starters it will as they say" twist its tail".....of course you have to have the right cranking amp battery I'm including a pic of the type of winding in some big block delco Remy starter I can't find and olds one in particular ',but they had them
