How Can You Get ONE Key For ALL The Locks On Your 79, or 83-86 A/G-body Car?

It seems that I recall the later columns still have the slot for the plunger. Maybe flashed over in casting (been a while), but I swear I have used an early cylinder in the late column.

My presumption is that the screw was added as an anti-theft measure to prevent slide-hammer removal of the cylinder.

If I remember, I'll check the loose column I have tomorrow to see if the slot is there.

In fact, there's stuff in the Strattec books alluding to the either/or as I mentioned earlier when the 78 style ignition switch was used in the 79 models, but in the field they would be replaced with the screw types.

This is from the 1987 Briggs and Stratton parts book. Note the words that depict the fact that "1979 through current" (1987) columns come with the 78 style lock but the field service says you can use the screw type for added security after the vehicle has left the fleet category. It appears any of the column locks would physically fit 79 and up columns on a G-body. The 609530 is the regular ignition lock with the chromed bezel.

This piece is from I think a 1984 k5 blazer, but as many know, for the most part, everything from the tilt up is the same for the same style of column. It has both the screw slot hole and the slot for the other style, so the kit on eBay should work. I thought about doing this, but one thing I like is the nostalgia factor of having two keys. If I were to daily one though, I might have to changt.
