I'm using a wire brush on an angle grinder and I was wondering how clean I needed to get the frame before POR or EPOXY primer? I'm having a hard time with the black rust!

Thats how i cleaned my frame but I went over it with some rough scotch brite to give the primer something to "bite" into. Then I scuffed it again with a finer grit scotch brite then put 4 heavy coats of paint turned out beautiful!

Thanks for that info! So did you use an epoxy primer?

I used rustolem auto primer. Then scuffed that with scotch brite. Then top coated that with 4 coats of rustolem semi gloss black turn out beautiful. I just hope its durable. It should be since it is never going to see a winter and very little rain driving.

It should be degreased and scuffed very good! If you can afford to check in your area how much to getcod blasted. Since you have the fraendedme out it would be super easy to paint right after blasTing.

I degreased mine, wire brushed it and did the scotch brite pads but could not get that factory grease coating off the frame. That's why I ended up blasting the frame.

Just a suggestion, spraying phosphoric acid will etch the metal and provide some rust protection (don't leave it out in the rain!) till you paint it. Phosphoric acid will also remove rust. For tough spots you could spray it and then wrap it in plastic to keep it from drying out, the longer the acid is on there the more rust it will remove. Plastic wrap would work. Do NOT do this in an enclosed area, fumes are bad for you.

I ended up buying a kit from kbs coating which comes with greaser and a metal etcher... I will make sure I scrub with greaser before I use the metal prep! Thanks for the advice!!!!

I degreased, power washed, scrubbed, degreases & power washed, Then I used the VHT chassis & roll bar paint, its self etching no need for primer, its been about 7 months no deterioration or rust spots & I live in a rainforest, my two bits
