that's what I do..and with a short wobbly extension with the socket on it .....I don't see what the problem could be with the transmission out of the way tho...and if the clutch fork is in the way remove it..
 
Yup that's how I got mine off. Let the tailshaft down and support the pan with a jack so it doesnt come crashing down on your skull and get a ton of extensions and muscle it off.
