I have heard of the method of filling the tubing with fine sand many years ago. However, I use a tubing bender like Bonnewagon has shown. It's worked for me.
One day I'll have to invest in a good flaring tool. The cheap generic ones just don't cut the muster. They're good enough for thin tube copper, but that's another topic entirely.
