Howdy folks, I had seen a few cars at a custom car show that had tail pipe turbo's,
But got no info on how they work or what mods are required for install.
Are they better than engine mounted setups ? Price prohibitive?
If anybody has any details to share please chime in....
I looked into the rear mounted turbos years ago when I was modifying my Lincoln and at that time the only place I knew of that had kits were STS turbo which I believe is currently trying to rebuild the company after selling it and then later it went bankrupt.
I have seen a few magazine builds and write ups and they seem to work pretty well especially if you have no space under the hood but the kits were kind of pricey.
As far as I know the rear mount turbos function the same as the under-hood turbos. There are a few physics differences between the two due to the plumbing differences. EG: cooler under hood temp, cooler air intake, and negligible pressure loss due to the longer route. Anywho that's my two cents.
I have seen them installed on C6 corvettes on tv. I agree that they have their place on newer cars that simply don't have the under hood space for a manifold turbo setup or a supercharger system. But with the length of the pipe from the compressor to the intake, you would think the lag would be crazy? I had a 2005 mitsubishi evo, and when changed the intercooler piping to an aftermarket setup that took a shorter, less restrictive route, the throttle response picked up significantly. The rear mount I saw, I think it was on Gearz with Stacy David, routed the piping over the rear wheelwell, along the rocker, then over the front wheelwell to the frontmount intercooler, then to the intake. Seems like it would be good for dyno runs, not real world performance.
Some companies like BMW and Mercedes, are using a hot-v setup now, with reverse flow heads and the turbos mounted between the valley, to increase throttle response and simulate a larger displacement, naturally aspirated v8 engine.
