Need Some Advice on How much to Cut off the drive shaft on my 86 cutlass. Recently installed a TH400 but the drive shaft was too long so meanwhile to drive it to work cut off the yolk like an inch, and now driveshaft went in but still had a hard time putting it in.... and now yolk is too far into the transmission...Know someone else has to have encountered with this before and would appreciate some advice so i wont spend too much $$$$$. Thank You

By "Yolk" do you mean the part that slides into the transmission? If so, that's not the way to do it. You need to take that thing to a shop that can cut from the shaft and weld it back together, then balance it. While you're at it, you'll probably need a new "yolk" as well (if I did read correctly and that's what you cut).

A little more info would be nice. What trans came out of the car? Different transmissions have different spline counts on the tail. Just cutting some off the end and shoving it in could cause you more problems and cost you more money than just taking it to a shop and having it done right in the first place. Just had a brand new drive shaft made not long ago and it was only about $250.

Dam so i messed up... Had a 200r4 in there before but had too many problems with those trannys. Six of them over the past 2 years.

And what could Happen if i keep running it that way?

Re: How much would i have to cut my drive shaft on my 86 cut

200-4R has a 27 spline output, th400's had 32 I think but dont quote me. How hard was it to get in? I wouldnt drive it at all until its corrected. Its way more expensive to replace a trans than have a driveshaft made.

Re: How much would i have to cut my drive shaft on my 86 cut

Dam! Well ive been running it like that for a week now.it was kinda hard to put the driveshaft bak on...barely went in and had to put it in by force... 200r4 measured 28 3/4 and 400 measured 29 1/4 or 1/2....

Re: How much would i have to cut my drive shaft on my 86 cut

Force? As in hammer? You definitely shouldn't have to do that.... If they are different spline counts, both the output shaft and slip yoke are probably junk now. The slip yoke on my 442 slides in and out of the transmission freely with little effort. That's what it does as its spinning and the suspension is moving up and down. I'm surprised you don't have any funny noises.

On a different note for future reference, a th350 is a direct swap for the 200-4R in terms of overall length, drive shaft length, and output spline count. Mounting points are different though.

Re: How much would i have to cut my drive shaft on my 86 cut

just get another driveshaft done, i wouldn't cut up the yoke and if the spline count is wrong you don't want to mess up the trans though... look up at denny's driveshafts and they tell you how to measure to get one made or cut. Any local driveshaft company could help you out somewhat reasonably, i'm going to get my cut or a new one redone  here is a link:http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/how_to_measure.html

Re: How much would i have to cut my drive shaft on my 86 cut

Nah bro the yoke and transmission came off a truck so the yoke fits exact into the output shaft. I cut the yoke cuz didnt want to take the driveshaft to get cut and balanced and all that cuz it was like an inch too long, so thought cutting and smoothing out the edge of the yoke 1 inch would fix my problem. But now the yoke went too in to the output shaft..
