I currently have a stock turbo 350 behind a mildly built Vortec SBC estimated HP just under 400 and 3:42 posi gears. No racing, just a street car. I would love to go to overdrive for cruising. I like the idea of the smaller 2004R over a 700R4 but honestly don't see putting big bucks in a race transmission. I have a hook up on a low mileage stock 2004R out of a Monte Carlo SS. I would definitely go with a good shift kit first. What other mods can be done at home to make it last?

Anything else guys? Thinking about going to pick it up tomorrow.

A hardened stator support is a must, even for a stock rebuild. Definitely grab that trans. if it's a CZF code. The later the year, the better.

My lasted a few years just no brake stands .it to much stress for it but slam on it here and there is cool .its a great street trans

Mine held up well behind my mild olds 350, had the stock 1600 (?) Stall converter, and a large B&M super cooler. It was sloppy with 165, 000 miles on it at the time of the swap.

I agree with every one else, upgrade the hard parts, also check the shift kit contents to see if it includes the boost valves and pump pressure spring. These are needed to handle your power level.... from what I have read. Good luck!

Well I got screwed "inclined plane wrapped helically around its axis". I drove 40 miles to pick up the 2004R and the guy sold it late last night, after I told him I was coming to pick it up this AM. So I will rebuild and beef up the 700R4 I have. I'll have to mod or build another cross member and build a drive shaft but hey that's half the fun of it. At least I have access to the machinery to build the shaft myself at work. I didn't like the small factory shaft anyway. I'll likely build a 1350 series. I hate buying anything from the younger generation around here, they have no idea of what a gentlemen's agreement is any more.

Ain't that the truth! I hate to rant in your thread, but most people would rather hide behind texting, make an agreement, sell it from under you and not be man enough to at least tell you. Very common on craigslist!

On another note, I've had a few 200-4R discussions with builders and they seem to lean towards the 4L80E before spending money on a 200-4R. It's a hard one to call because the 4L80E is heavier, needs a dedicated controller and doesn't have the BOP bolt pattern. On the other hand it's stronger without needing specialty parts.
