im having my car painted grey as we speak. and plan on painting the grille and head light bezels black.. is there any specific things i can use or do at home. or am i best off to just have a professional painter do it.. i plan on put black and alloy style rims on it.. but not for a while...

There's no sense in paying someone for something you could do, Unless your rich. Sand, clean, primer, paint

yea i figured.. and no not rich.. but any ideas as in the type of sand paper? primer?? and paint? im looking for a black with a gloss in it

Rustoleum Gloss Black is good i did the same thing to my car, they were chrome plastic before this forgot to take a "before" picture. It came out pretty good

I'm def not one to knock spray cans but if you can i would stay away from them. If your painter is cool i would do all the prep work on the pieces and have the painter put them in the booth with the car when they paint it. But sand paper i would say 600 grit would be good and go up from there depending if the chrome is flaking on them. Primer and paint i would leave to your painter.

First thing you want to do to your bezels and grille is to wash them with a good wax and grease remover. Do this before you sand them. This will help keep the fisheyes to a minimum. If your bezels and grille are already black all you need to do is give them a good scuff with a grey scotch pad, make sure there is no shiny spots left. Blow the dust off them, wipe them with a pre-cleaner, tack them off and paint them black. I have had great luck with SEM black in an aerosol can.

If your bezels and grille are chrome you will have to sand them with a red scotch pad, use an adhesion promoter and primer to fill in any sand scratches. Let primer dry really good. Sand with 500-600 grit paper. Prep them for paint the same as I mentioned above. Hope this helps.

All the above as far as clean/prep work. Paint wise I like Krylon Satin black for painting trim. It has a slight gloss to it and helps hide imperfections.

carguy..
i appraciate the advise. but i happen to have another hobby and it has alot to do with using spray paint.. and i will never use krylon spray paint for anything.. krylon hasnt had good quality paint for many years. rusto is the way to go... krylon wont last that long either due to how watered down there paint is.. so i hope u also try to stay away from so u dont waste ur time and have to repaint alot sooner then u should have.

i have a similar question, id like to get them looking like the plated chrome again. I do know some companies do make a paint like chrome. I also want to try respraying the trim around the opera windows when i get the soft-top replaced. Does anyone have experience with the "chrome" paint?
