The 8.5" G-body are 28 spline. The Eaton's have clutches like original, so they can be rebuilt, where as the Auburn have cone type clutches=cannot be rebuilt. I went with the auburn in my '83 Hurst years ago.

Eaton ETN-19557-010 $500

Auburn AUB-542018 $395
Auburn AUB-542050 $485

8.5" rears in the Gbodys were all posi units. Its possible that the posi unit you have may be worn out or its a 7.5" unit which may have been swapped out earlier. Does the rear end cover have a tag on it? If it says "use limited slip fluid only" on it, then its a posi unit. Check the sticker under the trunk lid for build codes which will tell ya what it came w/from the factory.

I've read that only about 50% of all G body Cutlass' had the factory posi carrier. You do not need to change axles. The cars with a posi traction carrier did NOT always have the limited slip tag on the differential. My 84 H/O did not have a posi carrier.

I know for a fact that it is a 8.5 rearend, I have measured it before. There is no tag on the rear saying to you lsd fluid. how would I find out if it was a posi. Is there a code on the axle tube somewhere to find out.

Does it have the G80 posi code? Wasn't air shocks equipped with posi or was that dropped by 84? My 94 Z71 4x4 had the GT4 gears but no G80 code. Pulled the cover, open rear. Who in hell would order a 4x4 with the off road package and get an open diff in back? I put a gov bomb and much better now.

no it doesnt have the G80 code. the car had air shocks on it but the guy who owned it before took them off with the other hurst/olds stuff but I put air shocks back on it 5 years ago. I know for a fact that its 3.73 gears because at 70mph the car pulls at 2200 rpms

Air shocks had nothing to do with the G80 option. All Vin 9 G body cutlass' I have seen have factory air shocks.

It was only an option on the 83 Hurst Olds, but yeah, standard on the the 84 H/O and 85-87 442's.
