My son has a Husqvarna riding mower that has the mower removed cause it was rotten. He just wants to use it to haul stuff around his property. I can bypass the ignition switch and the engine turns over but if I try to start it with the ignition switch something is locking up. It must be a safety feature cause I can hear the shaft that would drive the mower lock up but I cannot figure out what is locking up or how to bypass it. Any of you guys have any experience with these riding mowers?

Is the magnetic clutch that engages the mower defeated?
Are you sitting in seat when trying to start?
Mechanical stall?
Ignition stall?

Thanks for your help...no, the magnetic clutch has not been defeated. How do I defeat the clutch? When I try to start it there is just a clunk in the area where the shaft is that drives the mower, the engine never turns over. I bypassed the switch to make sure the engine does turn over and the battery was good.

Tried sitting in the seat and moved the levers in different position but just the same clunk.

Sold them for ten years. Simply unplug the PTO clutch. There will be a small connector with two wires about 10" from the clutch. Either just above the frame or just below and near the engine. Most likely on the "right" side or passenger side if it was a car

Just a thought, I'm assuming that it has an electric clutch of course. Some of them do have a lever that you have to engage, which in turn tensions a belt and starts the mower deck.

If it still won't crank, the next step would be to check your valve lash, especially if it's a Briggs & Stratton engine. The decompression mechanism is on the camshaft. If the valves are out of adjustment, the decompression portion won't work and the starter won't have enough power to crank the engine. Remove valve cover, set lash on all valves to .004-.006.
Very common issue on Briggs engines

Did it work?

Did it work?

if you mean have we had it running at all, no. It was left on the property that my son and his wife purchased, we removed the mower part of it and have tinkered with it on an off. I need to get it so I can try to start it to see if there is any other issues. When I bypass the ignition the engine sounds good turning over.

I meant did the pto bypass work.
