Pull off the front clip and put on your car, pull the motor and exhaust, check the rear axle, pull the doors if they are nice, keep the nice interior stuff, and try and stick it on Craigslist as a ready to dirt track car. Or just bring it to the local metal recyling yard and get a bit for it. But dont expect much, my parts car I hauled to the recycling center without a motor or trans, doors, interior, or front clip wasnt worth anything.

Parts cars are awesome!

Re: I bought another Cutlass Today!!!!! (lots of pics)

Nice find & great Christmas present.

As the others have stated, look in the locations mentioned for the engine I.D. and the quick look for the PCV at the rear of the block for the pre-67 block. Just looking at it's hard to tell, there's some mix-n-match accessories on it. Another thing to look at is the oil filter - the '67 & earlier blocks used the canister-style, those after used the spin-on. '68 was kind of a transition year for some items.

Before starting the engine at least pull the valve covers off and look at the valvetrain (kind of worried with the driver's side head missing the PVC valve), down the radiator and the trans dipstick. Even if the motor's shot you got parts on the engine alone worth the price of the entire car!!

Keep us posted on the car & the insurance company.

Alright guys had alot going on today so heres what happened (ill try to keep it short and sweet)
ok so the guy (matt) showed up today cutlass and all.
we rolled it off the trailer pushed it into the garage and got to work immediatly

So we tried firing it up a couple times with no luck
it hasn't been started since 1999 so we tried pouring some gas in the carb AND SHE FIRED UP!!!!!
Stumbled a little but we kept it running sounded like a damn nascar with not cats no mufflers just the exhaust manifold 😀
i was so damn happy 500 bucks well spent because we really didn't expect it to start

anywho here is where i need your help
i tried to get as many numbers off that engine as i could because we were baffled as the weither it was a 350 or an actual 327
first things first
pulled the valve cover off the heads are stamped canadian with a number #3927185
behind the altinator on the front of the head is stamped V0502FB
above the oil filter i got 102N 371 388
so if anyone can help me ID this engine please do so

also i took a look at the transmission and it is a powerglide which should be fun
aloto of things wrong with the car but its a $500 project so it'll be fun
now im going to go look up all the RPO codes see what is was born with

Well the heads are

Chamber size for #3927185 heads is 69.625cc with 1.72 intake and 1.50 exhaust. This head was used in the 1970 model year as well as 1969. So definately NOT a performance head and probably NOT meant to have unleaded fuel run in them for too long without burning up the exhaust valves (unless they have had hardened seats put in) Those heads also were primarily used on 307 engines and not the 327.

Still digging on block info for you to see if its 327, 307, 350 etc etc

Can you see the back of the block just above where the transmission bolts to it on the drivers side? There should be some numbers there that will be quick and simple to decipher

According to the reference info that I have here, the FB suffix code translates to a 1969 327 from a Chevrolet passenger car, and it came with the poerglide transmission.

thats what i found too well it does have the powerglide so it is a possibility
the car was born with a 231 so i doubt someone would take it out for a 307
im hoping it is a 327 if you cant tell
but either way im just happy it runs

Ok called my uncle the engine guy -- he said th FB suffix would be a 69 327 or a 1955 265 which he doubted it was since the heads on it are not the power pack heads, so it does look like you have a 327 there.

thats awsome thank you for making the effort
so since the heads arent power pack do you think i could still make a decent engine out of it?
im somewhat new to engines but im learning
so any input on my newly accuired engine would be great
