Don't wait to burn up all the old gas, go fill it up now with fresh fuel. It will help dillute the old fuel and a bottle of Seafoam in the tank will probably help too...

well to be honest im not driving it yet. i need to renew the registration and get insurance on it. im getting it back into shape before i do though.

right now im starting the car daily as i think i was having an intermittent electrical issue that was leading to the battery being drained. i believe the problem is gone and this allows me the opportunity to burn the gas up while making sure everything is fine.

i need to replace the rear brake hose anyway and im not driving it with only the front brakes.

so a fill up isnt feasible at the moment anyway. if the weather would cooperate i'd be able to get more done a little faster.

just in case, i heard gm make "top cleaner" so remove the carbon build up. you may want to try some of that after your fix, might help out some.

ok i found out the problem. i have an air problem.

apparently the choke door was not opening fully and was choking the engine when it got high enough in RPM. i tinkered with the carb and adjusted the front vacuum break so it opened more when the engine was warm and the engine now sounds angry. it revs easily to 3500+ RPM. it didnt act like it had a miss or anything. the idle is smoother now and i think i got the fast idle adjusted though im not completely sure.

engine sounds really good and seems to be running better. im glad i didnt buy a bunch of parts just hoping to find and fix the problem though i still think i need a new fuel filter, fuel system cleaner and maybe some new plugs anyway.

i need to run the engine again when its stone cold to make sure i did it all correctly. if it runs fine then i consider the matter closed, if not...i'm gonna beat that carb with a hammer.

a question for those who know more than me. when you put in a newly rebuilt carb is it usually necessary to adjust the front vacuum break to make sure the choke door fully opens when the engine is hot and do you usually need to adjust the fast idle? rather, is it normal for these to be adjusted?

ok adjusting the front vacuum break was a bad idea.

i think i need to bend the rod connected to the rear vacuum break then because the choke door isnt opening enough when it the engine is partly warm.

if anyone can tell me if this is a good idea or something else i can do i'd really appreciate it.

i checked all vacuum lines and they're all good.

earlier i went out and started the car stone cold and it started for a couple seconds and then feel flat on its face. it wasnt RPM it was the front vacuum break letting the door open too much when it shouldnt have. i put it back to the way it was.

i check the connection at the choke and the tab on the choke was rusty so i scratched at it until i got bare metal.

when the engine is hot the choke door is completely open and the engine runs fine.

stupid choke nonsense! help!

id say get rid of the auto choke and replace it with a manual choke cable.

i'm about to yank the intake off put the 4.1 intake on and rebuild a qjet from the junkyard.

i hate dual jets! the only carbs that ever give this much grief are dualjets!

I HATE DUALJETS. they are the bane of my existence.

i have the fast idle set too low. i checked the emissions label and it says to set the fast idle at 2200 RPM. which explains why it always seems to idle too slow when the engine is kind of cold and would also explain why the engine would die when you the car into gear.

it needs to be set at 2200 RPM on the highest setting. it all makes sense now.

the car started up easier today. i had adjusted the front vacuum break and the engine seemed to run ok but the RPM wasnt high enough but i think that's because of the fast idle not being high enough.

im thinking when they put this carb on they didnt bother to set the fast idle at all. grrrrr

i still might put the 4.1 intake on though...it will be awhile before get a V8 for this car and 4 barrels of fun is better than 2 barrels of lame.
