I have sanded and polished lenses before and you can make them look new again if they are in good shape but I feel this is only to make the surface smooth and shiny and will do nothing to bring back color in an extremely faded situation.
The red lens paint and possibly clear it when you are done might be your best bet.

Tape is not my first choice either.........but you other idea is worth considering, thank you

Thanks, I used to work at an electronics firm where we dyed the plastic components into which the terminals would slide and lock.
I found out that there is like different recipes that made the plastic more durable, more supple, longer lasting to UV light, and colors
out the wazoo. As you stated though once that internal color is faded or changed, it is almost imossible to get that plastic
back down to it's basic elemental piece that received the dye and moisture mix to make it according to customer specs.

I've been given a lot of good ideas and I will think them over. Almost like when the clearcoat is gone and the color pigment is so thin
that you can't wet sand for fear of hitting primer. I see plastic in sort of that light. Just my .02 thrown in to the pot...............
