There is somthing wrong with my motor. if it isnt started everyday it shakes really bad. then after it warms up the shake come out of it but it has a loud tapping noise as its the lifter. the noise increases and gets louder as you rev the engine so think it may be that. but i was also told that same nise could from the motor not gitting oil pressure, or the crankshaft could make that noise( dont think its this because the noise is at the top of the motor), a plug wire could be in the wrong spot, and or a head gasket could be cracked.
Whats your opinions and what would has to be done to fix it as well as cost

307 olds... this all happend after i changed the oil, ive cleaned all the sludge out

my gauges dont work so hopefuly as soon as it gets nice out im going to go through the gauges to see if i can rule out the oil pump, also im going to check the plug wires again

Could be a lot wrong - and maybe not bad. Not sure what you mean by cleaning the slug out - If you had the rockers and wires off, check to make sure you didn't mix some up. If it is lifter noise the rocker pedestals are famous for wearing out - that would be the not bad.

i flushed out all the oil sludge sorry didnt catch that typo.

You are going to Wyo Tech, right? Buy an oil pressure gauge for you tool box. I know you are on a tight budget but if you are going to make car repair a big part of your life you can't go wrong buying decent tools.

I agree.... I think not having an oil pressure gauge led to the demise of my 30 year old V6..... Not even realizing my pump was shot and not pumping properly. You might get lucky and it may be just a plug wire vibrated off. Last summer my Firebird was running funny so I figured it was time for a tune up. I'm under the car to start, look to the left and think >" why does that look like a plug wire hanging :wtf: ..... Sure enough a plug wire somehow danced it's way off? I was only running on 7 cylinders.

Good luck >>> and with that title better watch out for the Grammar Nazi.....

A V-8 running on 7 cylinders is almost hard to notice, unless its the number one piston....and it certainly wont make a lot of noises....sounds like he may have left a bit of solvent in his oil which thinned it out too much and he may have spun a bearing or wiped a lobe on the cam/lifters not filling with oil....just my .02

I gotta disagree here. I had a bad plug wire on the #5 cylinder on my 400 small block. It shook and ran like sh*t on 7/8 cylinders. The engine runs perfect and there was no other issue besides the bad plug wire when this happened.

sometimes that 'sludge' is taking up excessive tolorances in parts,on older high milage engines.some of that crap could have also plugged up a lifter.

Need some more details

What did the oil look / feel / smell like?
Where was all the sludge located, valve covers, draining from the crankcase, etc?
What did you use to clean the sludge out?
Type of oil used, i.e. 10W30, 10W40, 5W30? Latest / greatest API-SN rated or non-starburst?
Did you do the basic checks, wires crossed, firing order and direction, cap / rotor o.k.?
Timing issue?

Agree that it may not be the crank or rods as they have a very different sound, more of a knock than a tick. Also, you could have a pushrod that is plugged, not getting oil-flow to the rockers. Or you could have a lifter leaking down.

The shakes, could it be missing - have you checked the plugs, wires? Wires aren't laying on hot exhaust are they, causing burn-through?

Granted....but the cam and compression ratio play a big role in that too... and misfires dont usually create excessive noise under the hood, just a shake and usually a popping out of the exhaust pipe(s).
