On my way home this evening, I stomped on it a little, to get out from behind an annoyingly slow car, and when I let off, the car was idling faster than normal. It continued to do so all the way home (about 15 minutes). I parked it, and popped the hood, expecting the fast idle cam to be engaged or something like that. It wasn't. I shut it off, and it dieseled for a couple seconds. Turned it back on, and it was still idling fast. The fast idle cam is not engaged, or sticking or anything like that. Bliping the throttle does nothing. The throttle cable was not stuck, nor was anything else, that I noticed. What could cause a fully warmed engine to start idling much faster than normal while driving, and then not kick down? Just another problem...

sounds similar to a tiny problem i had. Try and check if the metal piece that bolts down to the intake that holds the throttle cable is loose or bent. Mine was loose and it was able to move therefore id pull it toward the front of the car and hit the throttle and my idle would get higher because it moved back.

did your return spring pop off?

spray some wd-40 on the linkage see if that helps

Take a good look at the carb while it's idling. Check the throttle stop at the idle speed screw to see if the throttle is being held open. You can disconnect the cables to see if a cable is holding the throttle blades open. Make sure the secondaries are closed. Check your A/C idle solenoid also.

Well, it seems like it was one of those one time problems. I started it up this morning, and all is well. I checked to see if anything was binding or sticking. Nothing appeared to be. When I first got the car, and the carb was all gummed up and nasty, I had a problem where a few times the fast idle cam would just stick in the fast position, and not let it kick down. Maybe that happened this time, too. I'm gonna get me a can of carb cleaner and just soak the thing tomorrow, just to make sure. It's been a while since I've cleaned it. Still having some issues with hard starting and poor running when hot...

I had this EXACT same problem awhile back, but it happened when some f*g with a mustang that had an exhaust mod tried to race me, Funny part is, i still beat him with the 350 setup i had, which included the entire stock top end setup from the old 88 305 LOL, not to mention the carb was shot, the secondaries didn't even open, rusted/jammed shut. Apparently this guy thought putting the obnoxious wing and stickers on his stang added horsepower, sorry im getting off track, anyways, Are you still using the stock distributor?? If it's the computer controlled one, i'd point my finger at that, because when i replaced the distributor in mine the problem went away.

Oh forgot to mention, later on i found out i also had a dead cylinder, so my 350 running on 7 cylinders with a bad dist and Redneck engineered 2 barrel carb with 305 swirlshit heads, sh*t all over his stang with a wing, fart cans and stickers. Mhhhhmmm.

The best part is i was working for papa johns delivering pizza, coming back from a delivery, i got back to the parking lot and it stalled and wouldnt start back up

Looks like I may be replacing my dist. when I get some money. YAY! (Which means never. Have almost a grand in past-due bills, and only half that in the bank account.) I have a couple other posts on here dealing with problems that I've been having that seemed to go away after I replaced the ignition module, for a couple months anyways...then just kept coming back. I'm guessing there's a bad wire or something shorting or grounding in the dist.

PS, Is there a Mustang owner out there that isn't a f*g? Just kidding.
