she's a street car so i don't need the BEST, but i don't need to cheap out w/a $30 set.
thanks
nick
btw, stock distributor w/HP module, NGK platinums, HP coil, 9.7:1 compression, 6k RPM (well, maybe 6500), 383ci

before anyone says anything, the stock distributor is STAYING!!! it's not a bad system and it's fully compatible with EFI (that i hope to get next year.)

Good thread! Do ignition wires make a noticeable difference between economy versions and good versions? I have cheap wires and it doesn't seem to miss any. So..... what's the dealio?

Also, if anyone has an olds V8 and can measure the wires it would be appreciated. Last time I just took them all off without comparing and I just put the news ones where I thought they went. I wonder if I can google that. LOL.

I like MSD and they seem to last forever. But then again I've had cheapies that worked great too. The ultimate test is to get an ohmeter and see what the resistance is on each and every wire. You will be surprised at how many expensive wires are junk. ACCELL comes to mind. We once sat on the floor at a store and went through every single box of ACCELL wires with the ohmeter and they all had several wires in each box that had way too much resistance. After that we just buy AC Delco, MSD or MOROSO and all have passed the test.

I've always used Taylor wires and had good luck with them. I buy the univeral cut-to-fit wires and make them the exact lengths I need. Works out much cleaner that way!

in general cheap wires use lesser materials and less of them, along with lesser quality. in other words they wear out faster and break easier.
i'm really looking for suggested part numbers, if possible. (this way i know if they fit)

but i think carmanguy has a good point (if maybe unintended) How about everyone post their basic build and what wire set they're using or have used and the results. it might be worth sticky status down the road.
for build i'm thinking distributor, plugs, compression, and heads.
what do you guys think?

I'm using MSD streetfire wires, you can pick up a box from Advanced auto, I used the high dollar MSD Super Conductor wires and both sets used boots that don't like heat at all! stay away! so the MSD streetfire were the best bang for the buck with me, and they aren't melting.

is that with an HEI distributor or the CCC?

I run the sleeved Moroso Ultra 40 . I paid $165 + tax up here for them and I'll make some of that back from the increase performance I get from those wires.

As of now: Accel 5041K (cut-to-fit), NGK R5671A-10, HEI style distributor, gutted and used with an MSD 6AL, Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, est 8.5:1 compression, 7 lbs. boost.
I think that covers it.
