ignition wire recommendation

I had a set of those "live wires" on the 307. They worked as good as any other set i guess. They had a heat wrapping on them and had individual numbers on them for the cylinders. That 307 had a ccc hei distributor, DUI street/strip cap/coil, dyna-tech module, a/c delco plugs and the live wires.

On my 355 olds right now i have an accel distributor, stock 307 cap/coil because the accel coil produced no spark, autolite AR72 racing plugs and accel wires (yellow color and i think 7mm).

I plan on getting a Full racing hei distributor,cap/coil,module and a rev limiter from DUI for the 355.

on my ford im running a billet procomp hei style dist that was locked and internals were modded to hookup to a 6al box. i got some universal accel 8.8 wires on that one. havent put the motor in my cutlass yet but so far i got a new stock dist with a msd cap and rotor. performance. module. and i got some accel 8mm wires for it. i like the msd to but havent used those in a couple years. and accel work good, good quality, and are priced good. havent had any trouble with them so im gonna keep using them

I'm running an MSD HEI distributor with these dragonfire spark plug wires that measure 10.5mm and champion spark plugs.

No, these spark plug wires don't use a thick sleeve and are no BS. I took the extra wire that would have been used for a non HEI distributor to the coil pack and cut it open just to see if it was a cheap small wire with thick wrapping.

Good thread! Do ignition wires make a noticeable difference between economy versions and good versions? I have cheap wires and it doesn't seem to miss any. So..... what's the dealio?

Also, if anyone has an olds V8 and can measure the wires it would be appreciated. Last time I just took them all off without comparing and I just put the news ones where I thought they went. I wonder if I can google that. LOL.

Well don't worry about which goes where, because the new ones have an extra inch or 4 per wire so it's a mess.

I use Taylor 8mm's on my car and I love them. The boots are thick and one was touching my header tube for over 15 minutes until I caught it. Still works now that I've fixed that problem. Next set of wires will be the ones where they send you bulk wire and you make your own. No matter what precut set you buy they will fit like garbage on any engine and any spark plug wire separator or holder. Definately going to be making my own next time. But the Taylor's are well worth the $60 I spent. Oh yeah, Accel HEI cap and rotor with a stock HEI dist. 8.5:1 ish 350 Goodwrench engine. AC Delco s/r plugs

I'm also a fan of Taylor Spiro-pro 8mm plug wires. Simple, nothing fancy and priced reasonably. Prior to these I've used Accel 8.8 mm spiral core wire. They were sh*t.

I like the Taylor's. You can get them semi universal, where the spark plug boots are already on but the distributor connectors are not , in order to enable you to cut them to size and apply the ends yourself. It allows for a nicer looming of the wires.

I've once used a cheapo of brand plug wire that I bought at Pep Boys years ago. They had the silicone jacket like most decent wires and had the spiral core. They were a good value, but I can't find those anymore.
I don't think you need to pay an exorbitant amount of money for plug wires.

has anyone ever tested their wires to see what the ohm's per foot resistance is?. We checked the MSD, Acell and Taylor wires at the shop on lazy afternoon a while back at the shop and none of them came close to their respective claims. We run Moroso wires and our set of sleeved Blue Max that was used in our race car for over a season still beat them all easily.....

I found the MSD spiral core wires tested better than the rest- least resistance per foot. I also have the Blue Max on my TA that have lasted me for 10 years without a problem.

Mark,
If I'm not mistaken, MSD does claim that their wires have low resistance. I don't recall whether they compare theirs to other brands, but I do recall reading their stated claim.

Jack, I used the ohmeter and they were as advertised. I think the stainless spiral wound wires have it all over the other types. Hard to break, no radio noise, excellent insulation. I have MSD wires that are probably 20 years old and work just fine.

Mark,
I was going to go with the MSD 8.5 wires when I bought my last set of Taylor Spiro-pros. I probably should have, but people have recommended the Taylor wires to me, so I went with them.
I will put an ohm meter to them and check the resistance.
I wouldn't go with anything but a spiral (core) wound wire for radio noise suppression and performance.
