I got in the mail today an application for car insurance on my Wife's car. It was from Progressive, it had the correct VIN, it had my name and address, and after contacting Progressive's Fraud dept they said they had my driver license number too. The forms were all ready to go and only needed my signature. The Fraud dept said the policy was taken out over the interwebs and the Gobank account used was probably also fraudulent. OK so my name and address are not a top secret but my driver license number? And the car's VIN? Seems like a lot of trouble to what end? To get an insurance card mailed to me? After contacting my real insurance carrier they said all my stuff was in order but that this type of scam was happening a LOT in NY state lately. Any ideas?

I wish. But here in Shitty City the fishing is too good.

Other places have good fishing, AND, you can eat the fish there too without worrying about three headed kids, no kids, or glowing in the dark if you eat it more than once a month or so. 🤣

Seriously though, on the application info/DL numbers being out there, etc, could be a lot of things.

BCBS/Anthem had a BIG data breach, actually a couple, a few years ago. So did various retailers you mightve had an account with. Voter rolls were hacked in multiple elections in some areas, and your registration info could've had some DL info especially if you registered through the dmv. Political parties have been hacked for their registered voters too.

Edit: the why? Get "your info" then submit a claim against "your insurance" and/or give "your insurance" to "their cut rate insurance" as if you hit them for a subrogation claim. If you got a voicemail saying "progressive needs to speak with you regarding your policy/accident" would you call back? Or guess it's wrong number?

Well, I've been eating the local fish for 60 years and I'm not glowing in the dark yet. But when I clean them I have to watch out for switchblades and syringes. As for the policy- I agree. They get my policy number, driver ID, and claim I smashed their vehicle and caused $5000 in damage. Pay up. But Progressive cancelled it, NYPD is on it, and I am waiting for NYS DMV to get involved.

It seems that the phishing is also good in NY.

The only time I remember using my license for ID was picking up an order at Home Dupa. Someone could have copied or photographed it. When I was on Grand Jury I was amazed at the scam industry going on. They had caught a guy with hundreds of fake credit cards and licenses, some with his picture on them. Of course he knew nothing how that happened. The detective said they make a standing offer like $50-$100 for every legit credit card or license number. Then they whip up a fake with your valid numbers.

UPDATE: My daughter says a friend of hers that leases cars reports that today five customers had their licenses used to open policies the same way as me. They all contacted Progressive and the Police. All were local to the Home Dupa. Hmmmm....
