Hey guys. Last night I painted a few of my interior panels in my 84 cutlass supreme brougham 4dr. I washed them by scrubbing with hot water, and then washing with windex. I let them dry overnight, and when I went to check them this morning, the paint literally chips off. What could I use to prevent this? I am sure there is something that I have done wrong. Is there a flat clear coat that I can buy to put on the panels to prevent scratching?

Oh, and could someone tell me how to take the seatbelt out of my car? I can't figure out how to take out the seatbelt so I can take out the seatbelt panel to paint it.

Thank you guys!

I would not do my final clean with Windex. Chemicals may not be good for adhesion. I wash with warm soapy water to clean them. Wipe the entire piece down with lacquer thinner, which seems to take some of the "sheen" off. then re-wash them with soap and water. The final rinse with water only. Let them completely dry. Then use SEM brand plastic adhesion promoter followed by SEM brand interior paint or "dye". It's worked great for me. No chipping, flaking or anything.

+1 to this. Also, if you havent already, lightly wetsand the parts first to give the paint something to stick to.

I think I'm gonna try the adhesion promoter and prep/wash the parts like suggested here. I think that will solve my problem 😀

i just did mine and just sanded alot of the panels. and just scuffed it with a red scrotch brite

Ive tried alot of different interior paint. what works best for me is a light scuff, wax and grease remover, then plain krylon fusion paint. the fancy stuff made for autos ive never had luck with. Make sure you dont buy gloss though low gloss i feel looks best. Best part if you run short just go to walmart and get more.

Try scuffing them with an SOS pad. That will clean and scuff the surface then wipe them with thinner but dont drench them in it. Let them air dry a couple of minutes and then spray them in VERY light coats. Thats what I did step by step using Duplicolor interior paint and they look great and the paint is still perfect. I used SEM on the softer panels like door panels and dash. In my experience the SEM didnt work as well as the Duplicolor but they may have different prep setups so you wanna look at that also. Keep them in a warm place also I painted mine in 98 degree weather and thats when I seen the best results.

I scrubbed them with the SOS pad, and washed them in hot warm soapy water. The soap I used contained bleach and degreaser. Still no luck.. Paint just scratches right off. Any ideas?????

Did you apply small, light coats? And did you use the SEM adhesion promoter? I have one spot on my drivers lower door panel that I cant get paint to stick to. Its the part right around the door handle so I assume that there was just too much oil on it for the paint. The paint sticks now after using the adhesion promoter but it was a PITA.
