Is it morally wrong if you are given a take home Calculus test and find the answer and it's solution online then copy it? This is given that you have no clue how to do the limit definition of a summation problem (the question asked) and are failing the class.

Please note, the question is not what you would do, but rather if it is wrong to do it in a moral sense. My choice? Well... I'll post it later.

does the professor know? If so, it is not wrong, if he doesnt it is wrong.

If you work backwards from the answer though..... wait I wont say anything else

I don't think it's wrong.

I do think it'd be in your best interest though to use the answer you found to work back through the problem to make sure you understand it.

Well, here's what's so funny about the whole thing. I found the EXACT problem I was asked in my text book. It was an odd numbered problem so the answer is in the back of the book. However, the method to solve it is not. That was on the publisher's website. I did copy it because I have no clue what I am doing any more. I am going to fail this class anyhow, but I'd rather have to retake a D than an F. Was I wrong? Well... I think I was. It was one of those times when pragmatism got the better of me.

absolutely not... you have to do what you have to do to get a head in this world..

honesty gets you no where.. seriously.. IMO school is a joke.. 90% of the stuff taught you would NEVER use in the real world.

it seems like all you have to do to get ahead is either know somebody or be a yes man.

because it's a take home test i wouldn't say it's morally wrong, but i don't support it. you're going for engineering, you need to know this stuff. i think you either need to just study like crazy, ask your prof. for help or get a new major.

Well, I am going to retake the class. I need to do at least a D though as my grandfather is paying for school and he's a bit "funny". He has odd mood swings and can tend to be VERY selfish. I am grateful that he is doing this, but I need to get as much out of every semester as I can in case he decides to stop paying or write me out of the will because I said something he didn't like ( and it does not need to be anything big either).

At any rate, I have been going through a rough patch emotionally for the last few weeks and haven't been able to study or do anything but sleep and stay in bed or go to work. That's part of why I screwed this class up. I will probably use this as a catalyst to seek professional help though, as I finally admit that I can't just deal with my problems myself. Too many things came bubbling back to the surface that I can't just cope with.

I have an A in Chemistry, but a 59.75% in Calc. I still need to do well on the final if I am going to have a shot at passing with the minimum of a 70% that I need to move on.

Take home test. Need I say more? Were there stipulations on the resources used to answer the questions? If not, anything goes.

As stated I would go over how this was solved as it 'could' pop up again. When you go out and get a job and are given tasks they aren't going to ask if you got an A or a D. The bottom line will be if you can solve the problems and apply the knowledge to solve the problems.

The problem solver is the prized employee, not the A student.

Well, I am sure it will come up again. I am in Calculus I right now, but also need Calc II, Calc III and Differential equations.

Is it wrong to do what it takes to survive?

no it's not wrong
