Is the PCV valve and related components REALLY necessary?

So, as pointed out by you guys, we should in most circumstances run a PCV.

Now, if we don't have the stock air cleaner, should we run a push in breather on that side, or use a different style breather? I think most of you are saying it needs air on that side, I'm just wondering what you all think is the best option for that other valve cover.

Yes, in the cars where I am running an aftermarket air cleaner, I use a push-in breather. I typically mount it on the opposite valve cover from the PCV, just to be sure it is pulling through the crankcase. If you put a lot of miles on the car, replace the breather or element periodically.
