i have never owned or have any experience with that v6. but i would say with out a doubt.... WAY TOO HIGH! my sbc idles around 600 - 800. (6 - 8 on your gauge)
even my yamaha v6 in my taurus only idles at 1,000 rpms. (10 on your gauge). hopefully there is an idle screw you can turn WAAAY down.
My 305 SBC does the same thing. I have no idea about the V6 rpm idle range but on a cold day I just start it up then just tap the gas to take it off the fast idle and my rpms would go down to about 800 - 1000. My parents 79 Surburban (350 Sbc) and 86 Impala (305 Sbc) used to do the same thing.
