so with the failure rates of these MSD boxes what is the draw ? I know the guys that use them seem to love them but why ? Yeah I guess its cool to have a rev limiter, and adjustable timing from your drivers seat but beyond that is there some other benefit ?
Friend of mine has been bugging me for a long time to switch over to an MSD box but I am very reluctant
I like the MSD with the remote coil over the HEI with the heavy coil sitting on top of the cap. The weight of the coil can shift the cap under heavy breaking and cornering. I also don't like the module that is used in an HEI version so that is why I went with an E curve. The E curve can run with or without a box so if the box fails I'm not stuck as I would be with a distributor that requires a box to work. The other problem with an HEI is when they get heat soaked they go down on performance. When we ran in the Thunder car and Superstock division we had to run an HEI distributor, on extended laps the car would lose time on laps. The rules allowed us to run the DUI distributor so we got one of those and that did alot better than the GM HEI.
As far as the MSD box you can get them without the rev limiter but if you do get one with a rev limiter make sure it is a soft touch rev limiter. The hard rev limiters are really hard on an engine while the soft touch drops the power to one cylinder at a time.
