Jeep Death Wobble

I'm putting too much money into my $700 jeep, with these parts I'll almost be up to $200 for repairs and I have only done a little over 5,000 miles... 8)

My 88 Cherokee with 235k was owned by somebody who maintained it meticulously. It got wrecked, and I threw a quarter and hatch on and been driving it (with little to no maintenance) in the past 3 years.

It has severe wiring issues. Sometimes doesnt start, blinkers work sometimes, interior lights, seats, all but drivers window switch broke, locks dont, but its 26 years old, most rust free cherokee in town, and hopefully get to 250K.

Just Expect Empty Pockets! yeah these units(renix xjs ) are badass!!! get all your sensors under lifetime and PROCEED! I love my 90 xj,and just picked up a mint 88 wagoneer(xj) that ive been looking for! as for the dw,im runningthe bigger gc components(track bar,stabilizer,w/ bigger ie rods, and quick discos, lifted 4.5 and havent had not problems on the trail!)

I had a customer bring her Grand Cherokee into my shop one day and she told me about the Death Wobble. I had never experienced it and she was prone to exaggeration, I thought nothing of it when I headed out of town at 65. Hit a bump and it started. I replaced the Steering Stabilizer and took care of it, but further research indicated that it likely had a caster issue as well. There is very little adjustment to them and Lift Kits aggravate the issue. I believe your stabilizer will take care of the issue, but it might not hurt to throw it on an alignment rack some day to check it out.

I had DW on my dodge cummins the fix for me was new ball joints. Something to check while your under there too.

Thanks for the suggestions, I checked the hubs and ball joints and found them to be ok when I was checking the front end and found the play on the steering linkage tie rod and the leaking stabilizer. Some of you suggested the stabilizer will cure it and it probably will but in my opinion the steering shouldn't need a stabilizer if the design of the steering is without faults. I have driven other cars that had no stabilizer and had some play in the steering components but never came across the death wobble in those cars.

I changed the stabilizer this evening and the taper rod that goes through the steering linkage is a b!tch. Can't use a fork on it and the pin is so soft when I tried to push it out with a tie rod separator it mushroomed. I ended up drilling it out...The new mmog part comes with a taper sleeve and it's just a regular bolt which it should have been designed like that in the first place
