question about my 99 Jeep, the front drive shaft has a bad CV joint (I know it's not called that but I don't know it's proper name). I went to 4x4 place today with the drive shaft and they wanted $250 to fix it. They have a good reputation and sounded ligit but is there a cheaper way to replace that joint? Personally I don't even see why they even need to put 2 u-joints 4" apart from each other with that joint inbetween.

$250 Fixed isn't bad, but you can buy the parts and do it yourself for cheaper. As long as the cardan yoke (H yoke) is in good shape, you can just buy the ball seat repair kit for probably around $40-60, or if you have a garage account likely cheaper. The u-joints that go to this set up are not much more than any other joint. Anypalce like advance auto maybe napa can get the ball kit and joints.

Neapco part # 7-0081NG (ball kit)
joint part # 269 (your local parts store should be able to cross reference)

If the H yoke is needed, an ACDelco jobber could order it, part# 45U0836 or if all else fails a GM dealer can order it under part # 89029404 , it lists for $60.

The purpose for that set up is to compensate for the odd angle of the t-c yoke vs the axle, to eliminate or at least reduce as much as possible driveline vibes. Guys with big lifts also run one on the rear driveshaft too.

The 3 joints are new. I thought they were the problem cause it looked to me like the cv joint was ok till I got it back on. If I knew what the look for I probably would have noticed that before I did the u-joints. Thanks for the info on the joint.

I think what you're talking about is called a double cardan joint... And depending on how quick you need it, either tomorrow or monday I can probably get a better price on it than anywhere else you will find. Although we'll have to figure out a cheaper shipping alternative or try to get them to finagle them to give you employee pricing at your local Napa store, although I don't know how much clout a Pennsylvania Napa store has with Canadian stores... I might be able to shmooze them into it though.

I have a great napa warehouse store I go to and the guys always give me a break on the over the counter prices and thanks for the offer. I'm going to check out this used shaft and if it is good then I'll have time to see about fixing this one. It's going to be snowing sooner then expected I think and I had all summer to fix it. I'm proud of myself to have maintained my procrastination abilities even after all these years...

and I came across a link with instructions on rebuilding it...
