Vlad Tepis, Prince of Wallachia, a small but crtically situated catholic region that was totally anti-islamic and which lay directly in the path of a Turkish invasion. Earned the title of "Count Draculiya" for his "hospitality" when the Turks paid the region one of their periodic visits.
Do Not credit the Bram Stoker Novel with being authentic or representative in any way. shape, or form. It is total fiction and the current residents of the region still tend to beome visibly upset when the topic is raised. To them, Vlad is a hero and a defender of the faith and freedom. Think, Motto of the Green Berets, "Kill them all and let God sort them out". He didn't introduce the concept but he sure made it popular where he was.
