Hey guys. Well I just took my 700r4 to a shop, finally after dealing with backstabbing shop owners. Just as a refresher the one I have is an 85' version of the 700r4 and I believe it is what is referred to as the second gen. I went to the local gear shop called Nogalitos gear that is the biggest supplier down here for transmissions. This is what I bought:

-Precision heavy duty rebuild kit
-13 vein oil pump/kit (stock one is a 7 vein pump)
-Corvette servo
-Transgo shift kit

Bought all this stuff for $247 and has all the bells and whistles to make this thing beefier than what it ever has been. Do you guys think this setup will holdup to the 380hp and 450lb. The shop I took it to is going to charge me 250$ labor and after I showed them pics of the malibu, I got the response "Were going to make this one special" lol. So do you guys think these parts will hold up to 380hp and 425lb.?

Re: jrm81bu and 700r4 users

Well it definetly can't hurt, lol. You didn't upgrade any of the actual hard parts, but I think you will still be ok. Just make sure you get that tv cable adjusted right. At that power level and with a relatively light car my biggest concern would be burning it up instead of actually breaking something. So get a good cooler too.

Re: jrm81bu and 700r4 users

What are some of the hard parts? The only difference I was told between my 85' 700r4 and the 87' and later ones is the later ones have an auxiliary oil pump. I think mine would have a 30 spline right?

What is the point or job of the corvette servo?

To be honest the torque is probably around 425lb. but I like to have a little wiggle room. My radiator has a built in trans cooler but I'm also going to be hooking up an external cooler and mount that to the front of the radiator.

Re: jrm81bu and 700r4 users

The one thing I would definitely buy is the Beast sunshell upgrade. The only other comment I will make is that I was informed against the 13 vane front pump, only because my car is by no means a race car. The 13 vane pump if I remember correct screws with the line pressure a little because it has to move so many more vanes.

Re: jrm81bu and 700r4 users

Oh also upgrade the foward input sprag assembly

Re: jrm81bu and 700r4 users

I'm not exactly sure what all is out there for the 700 as far as hard parts. I think there is a billet drum available, maybe someone else has more ideas, but it will get costly. I would skip the radiator's transmission cooler altogether if it was me, and just go aftermarket. The corvette servo allows firmer upshifts, i think. That or an increase in band pressure. Someone was also selling a "monster valve" that would allow 3/4 throttle shifts into overdrive instead of the stock 1/2 throttle.
Something else I would consider on my next 700 woulb be a manual valve body(i don't mind shifting) and that would eliminate the tv cable altogether.

And what 84cutspreme said, those were the other parts I was trying to think of.

Re: jrm81bu and 700r4 users

I bought a kit that says this on the invoice:

700- 2&3 AUTO-VALVE BODY KITS
REPROGRAMING KITTM, ADJUST TO MANUAL SHIFT OR FULL RACE AUTO

I don't mind shifting either and would prefer it over the TV cable as well. Is it hard to do?

What is the beast sunshell? What does it do? I saw a video showing the part but not a good explanation.

Re: jrm81bu and 700r4 users

Here's the update guys. I went to the shop today and luckily they had not taken it apart or anything yet. So I went back over to nogalitos gear and got everything I would possibly need, minus the planetaries. This is what I got before:

-Precision heavy duty rebuild kit
-13 vein oil pump/kit (stock one is a 7 vein pump)
-Corvette servo
-Transgo shift kit

After going back to nogalitos this is what I came out with:

-The "beast" sunshell
-Brand New TV cable
-Lockup solenoid
-.500 boost valve
-Larger intermediate/low return valve
-Reverse input drum
-Forward sprag assembly

I told the guy to keep it an automatic and do not swap over to a full manual trans. So this thing should be good to go. I spoke with the manager at nogalitos and asked him about the alto red 7 and 8 clutch packs for the 3-4 gear. He said that the 6 clutches would be plenty for what I'm doing and that I would really only need the alto reds if I were going upwards of around 550 to 600lbs.
