The sunshell is probably a direct replacement except it's billet or made of another metal. Very common to break in 700's and 4L60's. They just crack. I don't really know too much about the 700's but on 350's you can get a different valve body (reverse manual) so when you want to manually shift the car you pull back instead of push on the shifter.

The sunshell I got is known as the "beast" and is supposed to be 3-4 times stronger than an OE sunshell and no one has had a problem with it. All the major trans builders use it in 600+ hp motors. It is reinforce welded around the neck that commonly breaks in the 700's.

Sound like a good trans build up. Does the Beast shell include a hardened input shaft? As for the cooler i run mine in series with my radiator first then cooler then to trans. I have had a stock Olds 88 trans hold up like that for years with plenty of abuse. 🙂 Good luck cant' wait to see how it turns out.

My biggest fear is that first gear matched up with my 3.73's. That should make a pretty interesting burnout

Hey Pat,
what I've noticed is burnouts suck in 1st gear with a 700r4... Even with my 3.42's I can't get the tires to spin fast enough to heat up the tires properly. And going into 2nd makes the brakes break loose. So this summer, I'm installing a linelock, so I can do some proper 2nd gear burnouts.

here's the car with no linelock, trying to do a burnout in 1st (skip to 2:15)

You can see it was specially difficult with slicks. I had to hold the breaks so hard because it would spin slow enough to catch traction. But holding the breaks so hard was wearing out my posi :?

Kkahn, that's just a reason to make more power, lol.

Pat, ya 1st gear will be over with real quick but its still fun. In this clip I don't think you can even catch the 1-2 shift, all you really get is 2-3 shift and then feathering of the throttle.

can't argue with that...

I can't hear the 1-2 shift in the clip. I'm running potenza tires all around and am more of a handling type of guys. She can do real good on a straight away, but I also like hunting rice on windy roads.

I have regular brakes with no line lock. jrm81bu, how does your car handle burnouts since your running the same gear as me?

Khan, what hp and tq are you making, and what motor?

you can read about my motor in my signature...

when it was fresh (in 2005), it made 425hp and 400tq to the flywheel. I haven't put it on a chassis dyno, but an I-phone app (using an accelerometer) told me it made 300 to the wheels. That was on bad tires and no traction. So the only comparison I realy have is when my friend couldn't keep up with me in his 2008 Mustang Bullitt which made 300hp to the wheels on a chassis dyno.

Also, I should mention...
My burnout troubles are also caused by my brake proportioning valve, which is hooked to the rear wheels, and was cranked too high that day (my bad, ha ha).

Well I was spinning the whole way in that clip til I let off. Honestly for long burnouts I miss the 2.41 gear and th350 transmission. The only way to match that tire speed with the 3.73's and 700r4 is to keep them spinning in overdrive, which I can but I feel like it's hard on the transmission .
